NEWPORT NEWS, VA – A man died last Monday, March 25, after his SUV collided with a traffic pole and caught fire at a Newport News intersection.
Newport News Police Department officials said the fatal wreck occurred at Warwick Boulevard and Nettles Drive at about 4:15 a.m.
Preliminary details show the man was driving an SUV northbound on Warwick Boulevard when, for reasons still being investigated, the vehicle traveled off the roadway and up a raised curb and sidewalk. Moments later, the vehicle collided head-on with a traffic pole and caught fire.
First responders pronounced the male driver deceased at the scene.
No other occupants or vehicles appear to have been involved.
